SHELTER
SHELTER is a coming-of-age novel by Canadian author Frances Greenslade. Sisters Maggie and Jenny are growing up in the backcountry of British Columbia in the 1960s. The story is told in Maggie’s voice. She is the youngest sister, a tomboy at heart and the worrier in the family. Jenny is the girlish sister with the positive and carefree attitude. Mother Irene is a free spirited redhead with a penchant for adventure. Father Patrick loves the outdoors and likes to refer to himself as his moniker Mr. Safety. Life is simple and idyllic for this family unit, that is until the sisters lose their father in a logging accident. Things begin to unravel when their mother leaves the girls to billet with a family friend. Irene told them she would come back for them but didn’t tell them when. Days turn into weeks, weeks turn into months, and months turn into years. The letters and money stop and their mother has virtually disappeared. Maggie gives up hope and tries to move on but teenager Jenny finds herself in a bad situation and really wants her mother’s help. Maggie goes on a search to find Irene but her quest uncovers more than she bargained for. SHELTERis a tale of a fractured family struggling with keeping ties, dealing with secrets and discovering the true meaning of home. SHELTER is a poignant and expressive tale with scenery as picturesque as a postcard scene from the story’s beautiful Chilcotin region.

this book looks so interesting…but then again…you always get
these great books Wanda. I think my teenage daughters might like
this too. My MIL grew up in the interior of BC so they might love
the description of the scenery. Can’t wait to read – I hope I win
:O)
